Setts are bought by the square metre and shipped by the tonne. This page gives you both: the stones we cut as setts, the sizes and finishes, and how many square metres of each thickness fit in a 20 ft container.
01 — Sizes and finishes
Faces, thickness and surface
10 × 10 cm and 10 × 20 cm faces, 5, 6 and 8 cm thick, and 10 cm cubes, or cut to your drawing. Sold as setts, cobbles, cubes or pavers — the same product under four names.
The 5 and 6 cm sett is normally specified for pedestrian and light-traffic areas, 8 cm and above where vehicles run over the paving. Setts are supplied loose or mesh-mounted on fans.
Flamed
An oxy torch spalls the surface, leaving a rough, highly non-slip face. Granite only — the thermal shock will damage marble.
Tumbled
Rotated with abrasive to round the arrises and pit the face. Non-slip, rustic, and standard for external tiles and mosaics.
Bush-hammered
Mechanically pitted with a hammered head. The most aggressive texture we produce, for ramps, stairs and heavy external traffic.
Sandblasted
Abrasive blasting produces an even, fine-grained matt texture. Good slip resistance without the coarseness of bush-hammering.
Square metres of setts per 20 ft container
Granite at 2,750 kg/m³ with an 8 % allowance for crates or bags, on a 25 t payload. Check the road weight limit at destination: it is often lower than the container limit.
| Format | Thickness | kg per m² packed | m² per tonne | Per 20 ft |

Kerbs and edging, but not setts, are also cut in Rosa El Nasr, Halayeb, Black Aswan, White Aswan, Red Aswan Light, Red Aswan Dark, Bianco Halayeb, Hoody Light, Sahara Brown.
03 — Gulf projects
Paving for parking areas, plazas and streetscape in the Gulf
Hardscape packages in the Gulf are usually written as a bill of quantities: grey and light granite paving, flamed or tumbled, 100 × 100 mm at 60 mm for pedestrian areas and 80 mm where vehicles run. Grey El Sherka and White Safaga are the grey and the light stone we quote for that specification, with kerbs from the same stone.
We load at Sokhna and quote CIF Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port for the UAE, Jeddah or Dammam for Saudi Arabia, Hamad Port for Qatar and Shuwaikh for Kuwait — with the container count for every thickness, because at 60 and 80 mm the freight is a real share of the price.

What a sett quotation needs
- The stone, or the colour — a photograph of your reference is enough to start
- Face size and thickness for each item
- The finish: flamed and tumbled, split, bush-hammered or sandblasted
- The square metres per item — send the bill of quantities as it stands and we price it line by line
- The destination port or site, and the Incoterm
- Delivery phasing, if the site takes the paving in stages
Questions
Buying granite setts from Egypt
Which Egyptian granites do you cut as setts and cobbles?
Aswan Red, New Halayeb, Grey Aswan, White Safaga, Grey El Sherka and Hoody Dark. Each is cut as split or sawn cubes and as setts to size, and each also carries kerbs, so paving and edging can come from the same stone.
What sizes do you supply?
The usual faces are 10 × 10 cm and 10 × 20 cm, in 5, 6 and 8 cm thickness, and 10 cm cubes. Other sizes are cut to your drawing: send the setting-out and we quote against it.
Should I specify 6 cm or 8 cm?
The 5 or 6 cm sett is normally specified for pedestrian and light-traffic areas; where vehicles run over the paving, 8 cm or more is the usual choice. Confirm the thickness against the traffic the paving will carry before you fix it: it changes the price, the weight and the container count.
Which finish suits setts?
Flamed and tumbled is the most requested: the flame gives a non-slip face and tumbling softens the arrises. Split (natural) faces, bush-hammered and sandblasted are also produced.
How many square metres of setts fit in a 20 ft container?
About 168 m² at 5 cm, 140 m² at 6 cm and 105 m² at 8 cm, on a 25 t payload including packing. Setts are a weight load: the container is full by weight long before it is full by volume.
Do you quote CIF to my port?
Yes. We quote FOB Alexandria or Sokhna, or CIF to your port, with the container count and loading plan for your quantity. Cut samples go out by courier before you order.
