How to import marble and granite from Egypt

Eight steps, from the quotation to the container at your port.

  • Our own factory in Alexandria: six Italian machines, nothing subcontracted
  • Minimum order: one 20 ft container, stones and thicknesses mixed
  • Loading at Alexandria, Port Said or Sokhna
  • Photos of your slabs before loading
  • Invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin with every container
  • Watch the factory

For importers, distributors, fabricators and contractors buying Egyptian stone for the first time: what a quotation needs, the terms, how a container is paid for, approved, loaded and shipped, and the documents that travel with it. Written from the exporter's side: the Wesha Stones factory in Alexandria, trading since 1991.

The eight steps

Choose the stone

Egypt's beige and cream marbles (Galala, Sunny Menia, Silvia Menia, Triesta) go into floors, walls and bathrooms indoors; its granites (the Aswan reds, greys and blacks, Gandola, the Halayeb whites and greys) take kitchen tops, stairs, facades and external paving. Send the name your market knows the stone by, or a photograph, and we match it to the blocks we can supply.

Send what the quotation needs

  • The stone and the finish: polished, honed, flamed, bush-hammered
  • The thickness of each item: 2 cm, 3 cm, or more for paving and steps
  • The items and their sizes: tiles, slabs, treads and risers, skirting, tops
  • The quantity of each item in m², or in linear metres for kerbs and skirting
  • The destination port or city, and the term: FOB or CIF
  • Or send the bill of quantities or the drawing as it is, and we read it

Get the quotation

We quote EXW factory, FOB Alexandria / Port Said / Sokhna, CFR, CIF or DAP, item by item and with the number of containers, usually within one working day. Marine insurance is arranged on CIF; on FOB and CFR confirm your own cover before the vessel sails.

No price list is published: the price depends on the stone, the thickness, the finish and the quantity, then the freight to your port. What sets the price of Egyptian marble and granite

Pay in three stages

In three stages. 50 % in advance, on order, which releases the material into production. 30 % once production is finished and you have approved it — photographs of the actual slabs or the packed bundles. The final 20 % before the container ships. Nothing is loaded until you have seen and approved the stone you are paying for.

Approve the stone before it ships

Natural stone varies in colour and veining from block to block, so approve the sample or the batch before production. Once the order is cut and finished, you get photographs of the actual slabs or the packed bundles, or you inspect at the factory, before the 30 % payment and before anything is loaded. For large orders clients often send an inspector, or we arrange a third-party inspection.

Loading the 20 ft container

The minimum order is 1 × 20 ft container. A 20 ft is the unit because stone runs out of payload long before it runs out of space, and mixed loads (different stones, thicknesses and finishes in one box) are normal.

Slabskg per m² packedm² per 20 ft, about
Marble 2 cm58.3429 m²
Marble 3 cm87.5286 m²
Granite 2 cm59.4421 m²
Granite 3 cm89.1281 m²

On a payload of 25 tonnes including packing. Road weight limits at your end may mean a lighter load: tell us the weight your haulier accepts and we load to it. Loading figures for every thickness

Shipping

We book with the lines calling at our ports: Alexandria and Port Said for Europe, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Sokhna for the Gulf, Asia and East Africa. We quote whichever is cheapest to your destination and give you the sailing and the transit time before you confirm. Every container is photographed loaded and sealed, with the seal number visible, before the vessel sails.

Transit times are indicative port-to-port sailing times and exclude customs and inland haulage. Confirm at booking — they move with the season and the service.

Documents, duty and clearance

With every container: the commercial invoice and packing list, itemised by bundle and crate; the bill of lading; a certificate of origin legalised by the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce; heat-treated, ISPM 15-stamped timber. Customs clearance at your end is yours or your broker's.

Whether Egyptian stone pays duty depends on the trade agreement between Egypt and your country: the table below gathers what each market page says.

Questions importers ask first

What is the minimum order?

1 × 20 ft container. Different stones, finishes and thicknesses can travel in the same container.

How many m² fit in a 20 ft container?

About 429 m² of marble or 421 m² of granite at 2 cm, and about 286 m² of marble or 281 m² of granite at 3 cm, on a 25 t payload with packing.

How is payment staged?

50 % in advance, on order; 30 % after your approval of the finished production; 20 % before shipping.

Do you ship less than a container?

No: full containers only. Several stones can be consolidated into one container to fill it.

Can you supply test reports and a CE declaration?

Tell us the destination and the use at quotation stage. For the stone you select we arrange water absorption, flexural strength and abrasion tests at an accredited laboratory, and we confirm with you the documentation your market requires.

Can I get samples first?

Yes. Cut samples go out by courier; ask us on WhatsApp for the dispatch date. Sample cost is credited against your first order.

Where do the blocks come from?

From the Galala, Minya, Aswan and Sinai beds. We select and buy the blocks at the quarries, then saw and finish them at our factory in the Abd El Kader manufacturing area of Alexandria.

Send us a port and a quantity.

You get FOB and CIF prices and a loading plan, usually within one working day.
