We are an Alexandria factory selling to importers, distributors, contractors and developers. This page sets out what buying Egyptian stone looks like from an African port: the duty position, the routes, what sells, and how an order runs.

Duty-free into the COMESA countries

Egypt is in the COMESA free-trade area with Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Egyptian-origin stone shipped to them with a valid COMESA certificate of origin enters free of import duty; marble and granite from China, India or Turkey pays the full rate.

In East Africa that is the line on the landed cost that matters most on a container of polished slabs or tiles. We arrange the certificate of origin with the shipping documents; confirm the current treatment with your customs broker before we load, because tariff schedules change.

The rest of the continent: AfCFTA

Outside COMESA, the African Continental Free Trade Area is phasing in preferences for Egyptian goods, claimed with an AfCFTA certificate of origin issued in Egypt. How far each country has cut its rate on stone so far varies, so for Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and the others the duty position is checked with your broker for each quotation.

Routes

East Africa

Sokhna on the Red Sea is the loading port: Mombasa for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, Dar es Salaam for Tanzania and Zambia. Most sailings go through a transhipment port and the routing depends on the state of the Red Sea at the time, so the transit time is confirmed when the container is booked.

West Africa

Alexandria serves Dakar, Abidjan, Tema and Lagos, with direct and transhipment services both running; Malabo and Bata go through a transhipment port. The transit time is confirmed at booking.

Southern Africa

Durban and Cape Town, from Alexandria or Sokhna, with the routing and the transhipment port confirmed at booking.

North Africa

Short Mediterranean legs to Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi, Algiers, Oran, Radès, Sfax and Casablanca, and Libya by truck through Sallum, where the border is running, as well as by sea.

What sells, and what it competes with

Beige and cream marble

Galala, Sunny Menia, Silvia Menia, Triesta and Crema Egypt for hotel lobbies, apartments and bathrooms — the market Spanish and Turkish beige serve across West Africa today. Same look, a different source, and a shorter sea leg to East Africa.

Granite

Aswan Red, Black Aswan, Grey Aswan and New Halayeb for floors, stairs, kitchen tops, paving and kerbs, against the Chinese and Indian granite that most African markets import now.

Blocks

Squared, net-measured blocks sold by the cubic metre for processors who saw and finish locally.

Cut-to-size

Tiles, steps, sills, skirting, countertops and vanity tops cut to your drawings, piece-marked and crated in installation order, for contractors who would rather not cut on site.
