Exporting to Switzerland

Egyptian marble and granite for Switzerland

No customs duty at all: Switzerland zero-rated industrial imports in 2024, so the landed cost here is freight and rail, not tariff.

02 — Paperwork

What has to travel with it

Switzerland is outside the EU, but its Bauproduktegesetz has run in parallel with the European regime since July 2015, and the mutual recognition agreement means CE marking and a Declaration of Performance are accepted as they stand — EN 12057, EN 12058 and EN 1469, most of it System 4. Swiss stone work is then executed to SIA 246, which is a contract standard rather than a product one: it governs tolerances, bedding and jointing on site, so it shapes what the mason will ask of a slab. Import VAT is 8.1 per cent. Since January 2024 industrial goods carry no Swiss customs duty whatever their origin, so a preference certificate buys you nothing here.

03 — What sells here

Stone that suits Switzerland

Switzerland has no volume marble industry of its own, and most of what it lays arrives through Italian processors. That is the whole argument for buying direct: it takes a margin out of a market where labour and fit-out already cost more than the stone. Cream and pale grey marble goes into Zurich, Geneva and Basel interiors, granite into external paving, plinths and cemetery work. Tolerance expectations are the tightest we quote to anywhere, so we would rather agree the setting-out drawings before cutting than argue about millimetres after.

04 — Questions

Buying from Egypt, into Switzerland

Do we need a certificate of origin?

No. Switzerland removed customs duty on all industrial goods in January 2024, whatever their origin, so a EUR.1 buys you nothing. We issue one only if your forwarder wants it on file.

How does the stone reach Switzerland?

By sea to Genoa, then rail to Basel on the Mittelmeerzug, which runs three round trips a week. We quote CIF Genoa or DAP to your site from there.

Is CE marking accepted in Switzerland?

Yes. The Bauproduktegesetz runs in parallel with the European regime and the mutual recognition agreement covers construction products, so a Declaration of Performance stands as issued.

Can you work to SIA 246?

SIA 246 governs the stone work on site rather than the product itself, but tell us the tolerances it puts on you and we cut to them.

Quoting for Switzerland?

Send the stone, the finish, the thickness, the quantity and the destination port. You get FOB and CIF prices and a lead time, usually within one working day.
