Imperial Grey — marble slab
Polished slab

Drag the slab to turn it, or use the arrow keys. Switching finish re-renders the surface — polished throws a hard specular, the abraded finishes open the surface up and knock the colour back.

Imperial Grey is North Sinai's grey: a fine-grained silver ground carrying pale crystalline veins that only really switch on under a polish, where they catch the light against the darker matrix. It is bought most often as a substitute, by specifiers working to Pietra Grey or Bardiglio who want the look at a fraction of the landed cost, and it earns that on the polish, taking a mirror without the pitting that troubles softer greys. Availability is high, so it can carry a floor and not only a feature wall. One point to settle on the drawing: stairs and risers are among its uses, but steps are not in its format list, so treads are worked as cut-to-size pieces to your setting-out rather than ordered as a standard step profile. Polished, honed, brushed and leathered are all produced, and leathered is the one to look at for vanity tops.

Imperial Grey Dark is the same North Sinai bed selected for the blocks that run to charcoal, where the pale veining reads as a bright line instead of a soft drift, and the two grades are meant to be used on the same job. If you want white veining on a grey ground rather than crystalline silver, that is Milly Gray, out of Minya.

Photographs

Imperial Grey in the yard

Photographs of our own blocks, slabs and finished work. Slab photography shows one slab — the block it came from is what you are quoted against.

Laid out

Imperial Grey across a floor

A photograph shows one slab on a stand. This shows the stone tile after tile — where the pattern repeats, how far the tone drifts across a batch, and what the joint does to it. Every tile here is cut from a different part of the surface, the way material comes out of a real crate.

Imperial Grey tile — Egyptian marble

Indicative layout. Tone drift is deliberate — no two tiles from one batch match exactly, and a laid floor should never look like one photograph repeated.

In the room

Imperial Grey against your wall colour

Nobody buys stone on a white background. Put Imperial Grey on the floor, up the wall or across a worktop, set the colour it will actually sit against, and change the light — the same three questions every client asks on a site visit, answered before the sample ships.

The slab above turns; this is the same stone at the size it sits in your hand. Change the finish and it re-cuts.

Asked about this stone

Imperial Grey — questions buyers ask

Is it a like-for-like replacement for Pietra Grey or Bardiglio?

It is specified as the substitute and lands at a fraction of the cost, but it is its own stone — a silver ground with pale crystalline veining rather than the imported figure. Get slab photographs before committing it to a visible surface.

How does it take a polish?

This is what it is bought for: it takes a mirror polish without the pitting that shows up on softer greys, and the crystalline veins only really read once the surface is polished.

Can you supply steps in Imperial Grey?

Treads and risers are made, but as cut-to-size worked to your setting-out — steps are not one of the stock formats in this stone. Send the stair drawing and the pieces come back piece-marked.

Which finish for a vanity top?

Leathered: a soft satin with slight relief that hides fingerprints and water marks. Polished is the alternative if you want the crystalline veining to flash, and honed and brushed are also produced.
