Brown Onyx does less than any other onyx in the range with the light off, and more than any of them with it on. Unlit it is close to opaque, a dark chocolate surface with the banding barely readable, easily taken for a dark marble. Put a light behind it and the bands come up amber against a near-black ground and the panel opens completely. It is the largest gap between lit and unlit of anything we handle, which makes it a lighting decision before it is a stone decision: specified without a light source, most of what you are paying for never appears. Every application listed for it is vertical or lit — backlit panels, bar fronts, feature walls, reception desks, lighting — and none of them is a horizontal work surface. Onyx Miele is warm in both states, honey lit and honey unlit. Brown Onyx only gets there with a light behind it, and without one it is a considerably darker and flatter surface.

Gangsaw slabs
Full-size slabs from the gangsaw. Marble typically 2.6 – 3.0 × 1.6 – 1.9 m in 2 cm and 3 cm; granite 2 cm and 3 cm. Bundled by block so vein sequence is preserved.

Brown Onyx — questions buyers ask
Do I have to see it lit before specifying it?
Yes. A sample on a desk tells you almost nothing here, because the amber only exists with light behind it — put your own light source behind the sample, at the thickness you intend to build.
What does it look like with the lighting switched off?
Dark brown and nearly flat, closer to a dark marble than to an onyx. If the panel sits somewhere that will be unlit for much of the day, decide whether that state is acceptable before committing.
Polished or honed for a backlit panel?
Both are offered. Polished keeps more depth in the dark ground when the light is off; honed removes the reflections that a dark glossy panel picks up from the room around it.
Can it be book-matched?
