Drag the slab to turn it, or use the arrow keys. Switching finish re-renders the surface — polished throws a hard specular, the abraded finishes open the surface up and knock the colour back.

Marquina Black is the high-contrast slab in the range: a dense black ground crossed by sharp white veins, with nothing gradual about the transition. It is bought for one element rather than a whole kitchen — an island, a bar top, a feature wall, a pair of table tops — because the pattern is strong enough to carry a room by itself. The practical argument against the natural marquina marble is acid: this is engineered quartz, so a lemon cut on the top will not etch it and there is no sealing schedule to keep up. The veins run across the slab, which means the pattern changes at every joint on a run longer than one slab. Say at order stage which pieces matter most — the island top, the panel behind the back bar — and we cut to size around them. Polished holds the contrast hardest; honed takes the glare off it.

Calacatta Nile is the same veined idea inverted, grey and gold on white, and it is the easier one to live with over a large area. Marquina Black is for the project that wants the surface itself to be the statement.

Photographs

Marquina Black in the yard

We are photographing this material now. Until the shoot is done, the turning slab and the close-up below are renderings, and the honest answer to “what does it actually look like” is a sample in your hand.

No photographs yet. Ask us for the current slab and block photographs of Marquina Black — we shoot them on request, in the yard, with a scale in frame. A cut sample goes out by courier the same week.

Laid out

Marquina Black across a floor

A photograph shows one slab on a stand. This shows the stone tile after tile — where the pattern repeats, how far the tone drifts across a batch, and what the joint does to it. Every tile here is cut from a different part of the surface, the way material comes out of a real crate.

Indicative layout. Tone drift is deliberate — no two tiles from one batch match exactly, and a laid floor should never look like one photograph repeated.

In the room

Marquina Black against your wall colour

Nobody buys stone on a white background. Put Marquina Black on the floor, up the wall or across a worktop, set the colour it will actually sit against, and change the light — the same three questions every client asks on a site visit, answered before the sample ships.

A scene, not a render of your project: proportions are indicative and colour on a screen is never the colour in a room. Send us the drawings and we will lay the real slab sizes out against your setting-out.

The slab above turns; this is the same stone at the size it sits in your hand. Change the finish and it re-cuts.

How Marquina Black is supplied

Gangsaw slabs

Full-size slabs from the gangsaw. Marble typically 2.6 – 3.0 × 1.6 – 1.9 m in 2 cm and 3 cm; granite 2 cm and 3 cm. Bundled by block so vein sequence is preserved.

Cut-to-size

Worked to your drawings — worktops, vanity tops, cladding panels, mitres, cut-outs, drainage grooves, undermount polishing. Supplied piece-marked to a setting-out plan. How a cut-to-size order runs

Asked about this stone

Marquina Black — questions buyers ask

How does it differ from natural Nero Marquina?

It is engineered quartz, not the marble: non-porous, nothing to seal, and it will not etch when citrus or a cleaning product goes on it. The trade-off is that the pattern is made to a controlled recipe and repeats, rather than being unique to a block.

Do the white veins continue across a joint?

No. The veining runs across the slab, so on any run longer than a single slab the pattern changes at the seam. Order cut-to-size and tell us where the joints have to fall so we can keep them off the faces that are seen.

Is it too much for a whole kitchen?

Most buyers put it on one element — the island, the bar top, a feature wall. If you want a black surface throughout, Cement Ash carries a dark scheme without any figure competing with it.

Which finish holds the contrast?

Polished. It keeps the white veins at their hardest against the black ground; honed drops the reflection and takes some of that edge off. Both are standard on this colour.
