Ghiandone Aswan — granite slab
Polished slab

Drag the slab to turn it, or use the arrow keys. Switching finish re-renders the surface — polished throws a hard specular, the abraded finishes open the surface up and knock the colour back.

Ghiandone is a texture name, not a colour name: large feldspar crystals set like acorns through a finer matrix. In the Aswan bed those crystals come through pink against a grey ground, at a scale you read from across a room rather than at arm's length, and no other Egyptian granite reads like it. Everything practical about the stone follows from that scale. It needs a module big enough to carry the pattern — on slabs, large cladding panels and generous cut-to-size it does what it is bought for, while a small tile cuts through individual crystals and the effect turns busy rather than distinctive. There is no direction in it, because the crystals are scattered and not aligned, so panels do not have to be run one way and there is nothing to book-match. It is cut as tiles, slabs, cut-to-size and steps, but not as kerbs or cobbles.

Rosa El Nasr is the other pink out of Aswan and the usual alternative — same district, but an even pink-and-grey speckle with nothing standing out of it. Ghiandone is chosen when that evenness is the problem and Rosa El Nasr when it is the point; Rosa El Nasr is also the easier of the two to run across a whole facade, at Very high availability against Ghiandone's medium.

Photographs

Ghiandone Aswan in the yard

Photographs of our own blocks, slabs and finished work. Slab photography shows one slab — the block it came from is what you are quoted against.

Laid out

Ghiandone Aswan across a floor

A photograph shows one slab on a stand. This shows the stone tile after tile — where the pattern repeats, how far the tone drifts across a batch, and what the joint does to it. Every tile here is cut from a different part of the surface, the way material comes out of a real crate.

Ghiandone Aswan tile — Egyptian granite

Indicative layout. Tone drift is deliberate — no two tiles from one batch match exactly, and a laid floor should never look like one photograph repeated.

In the room

Ghiandone Aswan against your wall colour

Nobody buys stone on a white background. Put Ghiandone Aswan on the floor, up the wall or across a worktop, set the colour it will actually sit against, and change the light — the same three questions every client asks on a site visit, answered before the sample ships.

Formats

How Ghiandone Aswan is supplied

Blocks

Quarry blocks selected and squared. Typical 2.6 – 3.0 × 1.5 × 1.5 m, 18 – 30 tonnes. Sold by m³, loaded on flat rack or in-container with steel cradles.

Gangsaw slabs

Full-size slabs from the gangsaw. Marble typically 2.6 – 3.0 × 1.6 – 1.9 m in 2 cm and 3 cm; granite 2 cm and 3 cm. Bundled by block so vein sequence is preserved.

Tiles

Calibrated tiles in 30×30, 30×60, 40×40, 60×60, 60×120 cm and free length, 1.0 – 3.0 cm. Edges straight-cut or bevelled, back-mesh on request.

Cut-to-size

Worked to your drawings — worktops, vanity tops, cladding panels, mitres, cut-outs, drainage grooves, undermount polishing. Supplied piece-marked to a setting-out plan. How a cut-to-size order runs

Steps and risers

Treads with bullnose, half-bullnose or eased edge, anti-slip grooving on request, matched risers and stringers.

Asked about this stone

Ghiandone Aswan — questions buyers ask

What module does it need?

One big enough to carry the crystals. They are the reason to buy the stone, so slabs, large cladding panels and generous cut-to-size show it properly; on a small tile the cuts run through individual crystals and the surface reads busy instead of distinctive.

Is there a grain or vein direction to lay to?

No. The large crystals are scattered through the matrix rather than aligned, so there is no direction to run and panels can be set either way. It also means there is no figure to book-match — the pattern is random at crystal scale.

How much does it vary between blocks?

Like any granite it varies, and at this crystal scale the variation is more visible than in an even-speckled stone such as Rosa El Nasr — how many large crystals a block carries and how hard the pink stands against the grey both show. Take a facade quantity out of one block run and ask for slab photographs first.

Can it be used outside?

Yes — external paving and stairs are listed uses, and it is cut as tiles, cut-to-size and steps. It is not cut as kerbs or cobbles, so the edge and sett lines of an external scheme have to come from another granite; Aswan Red and Grey Aswan both carry the full landscape set.
